3COM BRINGS THE LAST GREEN MILE TO IRELAND
3Com is bringing the last green mile, which gives domestic users wireless access to the South West Regional Authority’s broadband initiative www.swra.ie/broadband. Ildana is providing the satellite package from the ground up. The Irish towns involved in the initial project are Cahirciveen, Bantry and Dingle. However there are plans to link to all towns in the south-west region and far beyond. The project is co-funded by the European Space Agency and the results will be disseminated across Europe. The plan is to implement roaming across various hotspots so that a user travelling in Bantry in Ireland or Venice in Italy will be able to access the Internet via his/her Cahirciveen account. Their personal profile will follow them as they roam. Ray O’Connor, Country Manager 3Com Ireland, says the project will contribute to ‘proving how satellite communication can bridge the gap of the digital divide between rural and urban regions of Europe. It will be a chargeable service, but the plan is to make it at very reasonable rates,’ he says. www.3com.com

MEN STILL DOMINATE WEB USE IN EUROPE
The number of European women who use the Internet is growing, but at a very slow rate, according to a study by Internet market researchers Nielsen//NetRatings www.nielsen-netratings.com. In May 2003 about 35 million women in Europe, or 42 per cent, went online. This is only one per cent more than in the year before. Based on this relatively slow growth rate, researchers expect male and female Internet users to break even by the year 2010. In the USA by contrast, about 51 per cent of Internet users are female. Recent figures from JNIR (Joint National Internet Research) show that Irish males are also more likely to use the Web than Irish females. The new numbers, which give a more detailed picture of who Web ads hit, say that one-third of Irish adults, or 1.05 million people, are regular Internet users. About 43 percent of Irish males use the Net regularly, compared to just 27 percent of females. Other statistics showed that more than two-thirds of Ireland’s 22-to-35-year-olds used the Web during the two-week period in which the data was collected. Conversely, only about a third of 18-to-24-year-olds used the Web during the period, with similar numbers for 36-to-50-year-olds. The JNIR/Monitrack survey also showed that more than half of Ireland’s Internet users come from the ABC1 bracket and just over a quarter come from the C2DE bracket. Yahoo was the most visited Web site in Ireland. Just behind Yahoo was Eircom.net. Source: www.electricnews.net/news.html?code=9364281

90% OF OFFICE WORKERS REVEALED PASSWORDS IN SURVEY
During a recent European trade show, organizers convinced 90 percent of office workers travelling through a London tube station to reveal their computer passwords. They merely included the question at the end of a long list of seemingly harmless queries. Experts say that because they are so closely linked to the ever-fallible human element, passwords cause the most headaches of any security mechanism. www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/21776.html
