parting questions
my last of 3 contribution here as guest IIA blogger, may I thank Fergal for asking me, my command line blogging had the -v verbose flag set the wrong way and unfortunately you only got to read 3 of my posts in 2 weeks which is a very poor average even by my own standards on my personal blog.
blogging will enjoy its first irish general election in the next 12 weeks and the stage is set for an interesting time in the irish
blogosphere, alas i will be too busy to blog post with all the real world hustings to do, but I’ll peak in every so often.
I’ll depart my tenure here with a few questions that do not keep me up at night but do cross my mind from time to time.
where is children’s Internet at?
will this country sink under the weight of foreign internet firms GDP? 🙂
in what year will broadband reach Tagoat in Co. Wexford.?
does Ireland need an Internet Minister or Tsar ?
will you stand up and be counted and help the IIA on its mission?
will IPTV kill the cathode ray tube (CRT)?
will social networks go the same way as the portal?
when will the Late Late Show be available on demand?
is a Terra Byte enough storage for the average family?
will RTE every go Free To Air on digital satellite?
will email always be the killer app?
will STB’s (set top boxes) me renamed as they are hard to balance on
top of a 42″ flat screen?

I always thought that DOT.IE by alex french was a history of the net in ireland, alas I was wrong, his publishers should give him a big fat cheque of an advance to write it as a follow up to DOT.IE

1998 sarah flannery wins the ESAT Young Scientist
the cayley-purser was found to be ‘broken’ between winning the national award and the european award. my involvement was to register cayley-purser.ie for Sarah, alas the company that paid for it are no longer in existence which means the people from Baltimore in Cork have the domain of their town. Where is she now I hear you ask, she went to work for Wolfram Research Inc. makers of Mathematica and went on to work at Electronic Arts.

defining moments
[guest blogging: Brian Greene] This year the IIA is 10 years old. I joined the IIA as a individual member in Nov 1997 after its May ‘97 start. I immediately became the IIA’s second sys admin to the old Sun Spark 10 in Pearse Street.
In those days the Board was a who’s who of Irish Internet founders, the day to day was run by denise and to put a time line on it this predated Lyn, Frank, Colm, Irene & Fergal.
A lot has happened over the years (and someone must write it all down). So take#1 of guest blogging. What I am going to discuss and I need your help on is, What have been the defining moments in the first 10 years of the IIA and the first 14 years of Irish Web/Net industry.
some I may explore.
Clinton Ahern Digital Signature Communique
Ireland On Line : Ireland Offline
WST goes Open
Global Crossing Landing
Indigo and all the ISPs
Boards agus Doras
The People that made it all happen
The unknown heroes of irish internet
so what else should I look at… use the comments box provided. podcast it: if you would like to be interviewed by telephone for this and future posts drop an email to brian AT doop dot ie with your details.
