IIA warn against domain tactics
New IIA Guide warns against domain scams and pressurised sales tactics
The last week has seen a major increase in the number of complaints
received by the Irish Internet Association from members of the public that have received pressurised phone calls in respect of domain name registration.
The new IIA Guide to Domain Name Registration (officially launched at the IIA Annual Congress 19.09.05) warns people against being taken in by pressurised and scare sales tactics of companies selling domain
registrations.
According to Eoin Costello (Chairman of the IIA Working Group on Domain Registration & Hosting) what typically happens is that people receive a
phone call from a representative (most to date are calling from the UK) stating that they are aware that a third party has placed an order for a variation of the person`s company domain name. They go on to say that they can offer it for a high price (usually quoted in English pounds) to prevent the supposed third party getting it. “Irish people are paying these companies up to 10 times the normal cost with some paying as much as E1,500.”
The IIA recommends that if you feel that you have been the victim of such an operation immediately contact your credit card company and stop the
transaction. In all cases where unsolicited contact is made by email or phone using such tactics you should contact the IIA or a reputable domain
registrar or your own current hosting provider and not part with any money in advance of getting independent advice. Furthermore please report the matter to the Irish Internet Association.
