IEDR call for public comments on their draft policy development process
The IEDR is the registry for .ie Internet Domain Names and maintains the database of .ie registered Internet names. In order to address some issues in relation to domain names in Ireland they have with the help of some key stakeholders in the sector developed a draft policy development process.
Basically this process will allow them with the assistance of an autonomous group called the Policy Advisory Committee to assess and decide on new and changed policies in relation to the .ie domain. For example there are currently issues around 2 letter domains, internationalised domain names and personal names in the .ie ccTLD which, for starters, they wish to address. (i.e. it is not possible to hold the domain name hp.ie at the moment if you happened to be a company selling pcs and peripherals or a tasty brown sauce even…)
You can find out more about this process on the main IIA site where you can also download the consultation document.
Please feel free to leave comments below too.

ie Policy Development Process: Call for Public Comments
The Policy Advisory Committee has not yet been formed. The Terms of Reference (ToR) for a Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) were agreed in Q4 2008 and published on the Registrar Discussion Forum (RDF) in Q1 2009. The ToR provides that the PAC shall be a consultative and advisory body to IEDR and will deal with questions and issues relating to the operation of the .ie ccTLD (country code top level domain). Other terms include:-
- The PAC may convey advisory views or submissions on policy matters to IEDR. All advice given by the PAC will be objective and in the best interests of the Irish Internet community.
- The PAC shall be autonomous in regard to its agenda and to the subject matter of its policy advisory recommendations.
- IEDR may refer any policy issue to the PAC for its consideration. Recommendations of the PAC shall be of persuasive authority and IEDR shall have due regard to them.
- Otherwise than as provided by the Terms of Reference, the PAC may regulate its activities as it sees fit.
The Working group met and further to the discussion an initial draft proposal was sent on February 22nd 2011 to the PDP-WG mailing list.
Further to the comments and suggestions received, the proposal has been edited and refined to include feedback and suggestions made.
This new version is for discussion purposes and all comments, feedback and new suggestions are welcome. Click here to download the PDF.
A road map was established for this project:
- On Tuesday 5th April 2011, this document was distributed via the PDP-WG mailing list and published on the RDF forum for further discussion and to collect additional feedback and comments.
- On Wednesday 13th April 2011, a reminder/last call was sent to the PDP mailing list and on the RDF.
- On Monday 18th April 2011, this document will be published on the IEDR website for public comments.
- On Monday 9th May 2011, a reminder/last call will be sent to the PDP mailing list and on the RDF.
- Finally, on Monday 16th May 2011, if no objection is made to the proposed document, this proposal will be deemed to be approved and will constitute the .ie PDP. The Working Group will be disbanded with thanks to the Working Group members for their time, effort and hard work.
Please do not hesitate to contribute on the PDP mailing list. Send an email to pdp-subscribe@iedr.ie. When you receive a reply, you can then post your comments/suggestions/feedback to pdp@iedr.ie

Free seminar on ‘Building a Business on Your Ideas’ comes to Galway
The seminar, organised by the Patents Office, is for small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and startup companies in Galway and surrounding counties.
Speakers include experts from the public and private sectors and local entrepreneurs.
Minister Sherlock said: ‘This seminar presents a great learning opportunity for small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and startup companies who want to scale their businesses or turn their ideas into functioning enterprises.’
‘It is not generally known that over 80% of new inventions are derived from previous inventions, so during the seminar information will be provided as to where details of previous inventions can be sourced.
‘The seminar will outline all the government supports available from incubation to commercialisation.
‘It will examine how to convert an idea into a business opportunity, due diligence in setting up a business, an insight into what are patents, trade marks and industrial designs and how they should be managed.‘
‘Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and now more than ever they need every support they can to start and grow’, Minister Sherlock concluded
Admission to the seminars is free but pre-registration with the Patents Office is required.
There will be an opportunity to meet and talk to the speakers throughout the day and after the seminar from 4pm to 4.30pm.
You can register for the Galway seminar by email at patlib@patentsoffice.ie or phone 056-7720118.

MIX 11 @ Dublin
I popped into a great event last week run by Microsoft (for my own nefarious purposes – me and my telly obsession were interested in the home server/ media centre aspect)
Enda Flynn, who organised it, tells me they are livestreaming MIX 11 this Wednesday and it sounds like it could be at least as interesting and twice as much fun! If you are developing and are device agnostic I would totally recommend that you pop along to hear about the cool things that are being done with Microsoft devices and interfaces. Okay I’ll shut up now because I’m beginning to not know what I’m talking about. Over to Enda:
Microsoft, Developers, UX, Web, Pizza, Beer, Surface, Slates, Prizes.
MIX is a gathering of developers, designers, UX experts and business professionals creating the most innovative and profitable consumer sites on the web. The conference takes place in Las Vegas, but will be streamed live online http://live.visitmix.com. Join developer peers for Dublin’s MIX 11 live stream gathering, hosted in Microsoft’s Sandyford office.
Once the keynote concludes, you should have pizza and beer in your hands and you’ll be invited to put questions to the local development team, as well as getting up close and personal with some interesting touch devices – including a Microsoft Surface. [Me: this is sooooo cool!] Alternatively you can always network or play Kinect
There’ll be great prizes on offer for both in-person & virtual attendees. #MIX11IE is the hashtag to join Twitter conversation.
When: 4.30pm – 9pm, 12th April 2011
Location: Microsoft Atrium Building (Building 3) auditorium, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Carmanhall Road, Dublin 18.
Diploma, Poll
Poll: What 6 – 12 week diploma courses interest you?
I’ve just published this week’s Events Alert which naturally lists our upcoming events (namely Twitter & Facebook for Business on April 12th, Open for Business: the IIA Annual Conference on May 12th and Digitise the Nation May 9th – 13th).
I also included a poll about possible Diploma Courses the Irish Internet Association might run in the future to help you with your professional development.
Our Diploma in Digital Marketing has proved very successful in the last 6 months and we thought that you might be interested in other diploma courses on other topics run one evening a week over 6 – 12 weeks. We might also consider running them as bootcamps i.e. intensive week-long full-day training courses.
I thought it was no harm to throw the net wider and replicate that poll here on the blog.
We have a few suggestions below but we have also added a field to allow you to make suggestions too. We’d love to hear what would interest you but if there is anything else you would like to say on the topic please have at ye in the comments below!

OpenData Challenge 2011: €20,000 to win
European public bodies produce thousands upon thousands of datasets every year – about everything from how our tax money is spent to the quality of the air we breathe.
OpenDataChallenge.org is challenging designers, developers, journalists, researchers and others to come up with something useful, valuable or interesting for European citizens, built using open data.
There are four main strands to the competition:
- Ideas – Anyone can suggest an idea for projects which reuse public information to do something interesting or useful.
- Apps – Teams of developers can submit working applications which reuse public information.
- Visualisations – Designers, artists and others can submit interesting or insightful visual representations of public information.
- Datasets – Public bodies can submit newly opened up datasets, or developers can submit derived datasets which they’ve cleaned up, or linked together
The competition is open for 60 days – from 5th April until 5th June midnight. The winners will be selected by an all star cast of open data gurus – and announced in mid June at the European Digital Assembly in Brussels.

Bruton seeks bright ideas for Dublin City of Science 2012
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D., today [Wednesday] announced a call for proposals for the Dublin City of Science programme of events in 2012.
‘Rebuilding Ireland’s international reputation for excellence in science and technology will be crucial to achieving growth and getting people back to work. I am developing a plan to put science, technology and innovation at the centre our growth and jobs policies. Part of this will involve showing to the world that we are a creative, innovative, scientific nation.
‘Dublin City of Science 2012, a highly prestigious event which was won in the face of stiff competition, offers a perfect opportunity to show the world what we can do. I think we should all get involved in this programme and help promote Ireland to the world as a centre of innovation and creativity in science and technology,’ the Minister said speaking at the launch.
The call, which will remain open until 30 June 2011, is seeking proposals for a year-long programme of events to engage the citizens of the island of Ireland in science. It is hoped to devise a programme of events that will demonstrate the reach of science into almost every aspect of our lives – education, business, the arts, sports and our communities.
Partnerships will also be sought with organisations and individuals who wish to develop events that will encourage the public to engage with science.
Dublin City of Science 2012 will showcase Irish expertise and creativity that will firmly place Ireland on the map for science excellence.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Patrick Cunningham, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government said that: ‘the primary purpose of this call is to identify events that creatively engage with science and the public.
‘This could be by way of promoting an existing event, activity or idea. It could be something completely new, something you’d like to develop within your own organisation or institution, or in partnership with others. I would welcome activities in any format, indoor or outdoor, through the medium of theatre, film, exhibitions, workshops, debates, interactive dialogues, online events, the list is endless,’ Prof. Cunningham concluded.
Also at the launch today was the Dublin City of Science 2012 Project Director, Mr. David Fahy. He highlighted the importance to include events from a wide and varied reach.
‘While it is Dublin that is the City of Science, it is central to us that a programme is developed that stretches to include the whole island of Ireland.
‘I would urge those with an interest in science and technology and their impact on art, literature, music, sport, communities, the economy, society in general to submit proposals, Mr. Fahy concluded.
The call is available at www.dublinscience2012.ie/pep
